Those who know me know I do not like Kanye West. Like realllly don’t like him. I have spent more energy than I should have professing why I think it’s stupid he has had so much success. I have almost broken up with someone over Kanye. I wish I was joking. So you can imagine what a pickle I was in when perhaps the famous person I hated the most started saying things I agreed with. Not so much the loving Trump stuff, but the free thinking stuff. Kanye didn’t drop any knowledge on me, nothing he said was anything I hadn’t heard before. But for many black people it probably was the first time they heard a person of color tell them they don’t have to be in lockstep with people just because they may look like them. But even more importantly, Kanye’s love of Trump helped illustrate 1) how narrow-minded the left is and 2) that the left doesn’t actually care about black people or really any minority they claim to protect for that matter. This post will focus on the latter point.
I was told by multiple persons that if Trump was elected all my rights as a minority woman would be taken away, including my right to vote. Two years later, the claim hasn’t aged well to say the least. To put it bluntly, black people are thriving under Trump. The black unemployment rate has hit an all-time low under Trump. Of course, the left can’t admit that fact to be a good thing. Now it’s “Well, the black unemployment rate is still higher than the white unemployment rate!” or “The black unemployment rate was declining under Obama anyway and has been for years!” or even “Black unemployment can be low and Trump can still be a racist!” All of these statements are true but allow the left to ignore a couple things; at the very least, Trump isn’t impeding on black success like they claimed he would. Furthermore, if Trump is racist, it’s not outwardly effecting his policy making. The left struggles to wrap their head around the idea that two things can be true at once. Blacks can be thriving under Trump and this progress has been in the works for a long time.
Even if the black unemployment rate was on a rapid decline that just happened to fall in Trump’s lap, that doesn’t explain the sharp increase in black entrepreneurship under Trump. It certainly doesn’t explain Trump’s aggressive pursuit of prison reform and his pardons/commutations of multiple black citizens. Pretty strange behavior for a supposed racist. If the man is racist, at this point I don’t care because his attempts to “cover for his racism” is resulting in good policy for minorities.
The real issue is that Trump’s approval ratings amongst blacks, though volatile, has approached 20%. If Republicans manage to hold an approval rating at or around 20% during and after Trump’s term as president, that would be enough to seriously affect Democrats chance at winning another presidential election. Democrats cannot afford to lose even a small percentage of the black vote which means even a nod at Donald Trump is not worth the risk for left leaning commentators.
The funny thing is, despite great jobs numbers and prison reform there is a problem in the black community that persists and is often ignored, the family. Government cannot save us on this one. The black population will never match whites in prosperity and success until we figure out how to keep the black fathers at home. So maybe we should stop worrying about whether a president who hasn’t impeded on our freedoms is racist and focus on getting the black family back together.
Although I am not a Trump fan, although I am not a Hillary fan, like nearly everyone else in the world I was shocked when Trump beat Hillary and beat her soundly. Trump’s victory and the resulting coverage confirmed a feeling I have had my entire adult life. The left is full of hypocrisies. Not to say the right isn’t hypocritical, they certainly are, but the way in which the left (and 65% of this comes from the media) has become too much for voters, especially those specifically hurt and attacked as a result of these hypocrisies. Here’s an easy to read list of examples.
Love trumps hate, is what they say. But the instant Trump won my newsfeed lit up with Hillary supporters spewing tweets and statuses that reflected everything but love.
The “When they go low we go high.” When Michelle Obama said this in a powerful speech everyone went nuts. These words were put on bumper stickers and t-shirts and displayed everywhere you looked but did the dems go high? No. They lost an election and decided that vandalizing cities in response would be a good idea..
Liberals are the champions of owning your curves and embracing your flaws. Call a beauty queen fat and you shouldn’t be president. Make Naked Trump statues and place them in cities around the nation, totally cool. Comment on Trump’s skin and hair, totally fine. Refer to Chris Christie as the “elephant in the room,” hilarious!
The Democratic Party claims to be the worker’s party. If you truly believed in worker’s rights you wouldn’t wear any brand that is a part of fast fashion.
The left claim to care about the environment while they and their leaders own million dollar homes, eat factory farm animal products, sport fast fashion, smoke cigarettes and fly around in private jets.
It’s only Republicans who want to go to war. Wrong. No, Bernie isn’t in the clear either. In 2013, Obama promised he would not put boots on the on the ground in Syria…guess what’s happening now.
The left advocates for sub-populations but rarely mention that the VA has become an absolute trainwreck under Obama with veterans literally dying because they can’t get in to see health professionals as part of a socialist healthcare system. They’re concerned about mental health issues but do not mention the suicide hotline failing veterans.
Women are anti-feminist if they don’t support Planned Parenthood, but it’s feminist to support a candidate whose foundation receives donations from Saudi Arabia (where women have no divorce rights and need a male guardian) the United Arab Emirates (where women need male approval for marriage and husbands are permitted to assault their wives and children), Qatar (where women need male approval for marriage, women must obey their husbands and marital rape is permitted) and Oman (where women face discrimination when it comes to child custody and divorce). All this according to Human Rights Watch.
Cultural appropriation is disgusting…except when Elizabeth Warren claimed she was a minority when she listed herself as a Native-American (because of the stereotype that American Indians have high cheekbones) in an Association of American Law Schools directory.
The left explains that white people voted for Trump because his racial and anti-women tones wouldn’t effect them, but the left doesn’t call out celebrities who are so wealthy and famous that they can vote for economic policies that won’t affect their lifestyles in the slightest.
The left is blaming “fake media stories” for Trump’s win but don’t point out that almost half of consistent liberals trust The Daily Show as their news source. Hillary is now complaining about “fake news” but what about when she lied about Benghazi and Bosnia? Oh and also when she blamed right wing conspiracies for the Lewinsky scandal. Brian Williams even had the gall to call out “fake news” when he’s built career/persona out of lies.
Trump appointing three generals (Mattis, Kelly, Flynn) is scary…but when Obama appoints Jones, Shinsheki and Blair no one says a word…
The left praises Canada and jokes about moving there…a country with border laws and strict guidelines on how to become Canadian. Interesting that no one wants to go to Mexico or really any country whose main inhabitants are non-White.
All cultures should be valued and heard…except for farm and rural culture which essentially would not be represented if the electoral college was completely abolished. Even Hillary tells us to “cherish our democracy.”
The left points out the people that will no longer be insured if Obamacare is repealed but don’t point out those that are punished via a fine because they can’t afford their premiums, or those that have insurance but their premiums/deductibles are so high it’s as if they have no insurance.
The leftist media puts pressure on Trump to condemn the riots (and when he did CBS held onto the tape for two days) but didn’t pressure Obama or Clinton to do the same with the Black Lives Matters or post-election riots, despite innocent people being hurt in both cases.
Trump loves hate. But a large number of the reported Pro-Trump hate crimes post-election have proven to have been fabricated.
No one on my feed expressed any concern about the electoral college…until their candidate lost. I can’t back up this theory with stats but no one believes for one second that the left would be up in arms if the results had been the other way around…in fact they would’ve called Trump supporters out if they had reacted the way they are now.
The left wants to give the government virtually unlimited power, but never stopped to think what would happen if that power went to someone they didn’t like. Conservatives have warned of this for a long time.
Even when people are arrested, the anti-Trump protests are referred to as “largely peaceful,” not exactly how the Tea Party protests were reported.
Actually ALL Republicans are racist and sexist and homophobic…but a Republican nominated Clarence Thomas, the two highest ranking Black cabinet members and the first ever female Black secretary of state were under a Republican, a woman has been nominated for Republican VP, the first Black secretary of housing and urban development was under a Republican, the first Black secretary of transportation was under a Republican, the first secretary of education was under a Republican, the first female secretary of the interior was under a Republican, the first female secretary of agriculture was under a Republican, the first female secretary of housing and urban development was under a Republican, the first Asian female to serve in the cabinet was under a Republican, the first woman to serve in two different positions under two different administrations was under a Republican, the Republican Party has had more foreign born cabinet member than Democrats, there have been a handful of gay Republican members of congress plus this last election the Republican presidential ï included an Indian-American, Black man, woman, two Latinos and a pumpkin.
The moral of the story is that everyone must be called out. Liberals need to call out conservatives but they need to call out other liberals too and vice versa. We all should be held to the same standard. That’s one of the biggest lessons this election should teach us but it’s one that seems to have gone right over the left’s head. When a negative story is breaking on your favorite candidate, honestly ask yourself how you would feel if the candidate you didn’t like was accused of the same mistake. Your reactions to each should be the same.
Donald Trump has flip-flopped and fallen victim to a large number of hypocritical criticisms and rightly so, but I think voters felt like they always know what Trump is thinking even if it’s different from what he thought a week ago. Donald Trump has gained respect even from those who are part of #NeverTrump because he calls out the media. The large number of conservative Never Trumpers may have actually helped Trump and the Republican party because it showed that many on the right can see past party lines.
There are things Democrats believe in that I can get down with, but I can only take so much silliness…and apparently millions of Americans feel the same way.
Ok, now that we’ve done the elephant in the room let’s get to the jackass, I mean donkey, I mean Democrat, I mean Hillary Clinton out of the way.
Hillary has been involved in politics for the last 52 years and with that in mind you may assume any scandals would be forgotten and she would be wise enough to at least not get caught. Well, you’d be wrong. To claim media bias for the Clintons is not fair as it is something more akin to media exhaustion. The Clintons have been running from national scandals since the Whitewater emerged in 1992. This scandal was the beginning of what would be a decade full of them, culminating with Bill Clinton’s impeachment and eventual acquittal in February of 1999. I know what you’re saying, Hillary is not Bill and I agree. However, Hillary was investigated just the same as Bill in many of the scandals and was accused by the alleged victims of Bill of threatening them if they spoke.
Now let’s get biased! Of the many of Bill Clinton’s accusers, the story of Juanita Broaddrick remains the most scrutinized yet least utilized. This is because after going years as Jane Doe No. 5 and not wanting to be involved in any of the Clinton proceedings, she finally gave an interview in January of 1999 as the impeachment process was just beginning. Lisa Myers of NBC gave the interview and to this day believes there has been no evidence that can disprove Broaddrick’s story. However, NBC executives did not believe the story was airtight and claimed the story needed more vetting. You may think this is good journalism, but what if I told you they looked at it for 35 days following the year long investigation by Lisa Myers; compare this with the two day turnaround between Kristin Anderson’s accusal of Trump to her CNN interview. Not only did it cost the network the scoop to the Wall Street Journal, but the interview aired on February 24th, opposite the Grammy Awards a full twelve days after the senate voted to acquit Bill Clinton. This effectively kept the interview out of the public eye during the impeachment process. When has there been another time where a news network with such a story vets it for so long it loses out on potentially huge ratings and the scoop entirely? Isn’t the goal to break news?
Since then there have been claims (even by Broaddrick herself) NBC was helping the Clintons; I say Clintons because NBC still hasn’t released the full interview in which it is reported Broaddrick accuses Hillary of threatening her. Today the media pours onto Trump after multiple women have claimed he sexually assaulted them. Women who, like Juanita Broaddrick have stories unsubstantiated by witnesses. So my question is, why has Hillary gotten a pass on her alleged actions? In one of her rare press conferences Hillary was asked in response to her tweet stating victims of sexual assault “should be believed”, why she dismisses the accusations of Bill’s alleged victims including Juanita Broaddrick. Her response; “well, I would say that everyone should be believed at first until they are disbelieved based on evidence.” Where is this evidence then? Don’t expect the media to ever investigate it.
Now let’s skip ahead to Benghazi. Have you thought about the deceitful press tour by UN ambassador Susan Rice blaming it on a video and Hillary corroborating with her? Good, let’s move on then.
More recently, people from Donald Trump to Dr. Drew questioned the health of Hillary Clinton. Hillary’s health has oft come up in speculation of her future politics since, during her tenure as Secretary of State she became ill with a stomach bug described which led to her fainting, resulting in a concussion, blood clots in her head, and delaying testimony in the Benghazi hearings. In perhaps my most favorite example of media bias towards Clinton, the Huffington Post called those questioning her health sexist, even when citing her numerous coughing fits as evidence. Well, as if scripted for comedy, two weeks after the article arrived from the Post Hillary famously collapsed at the 9/11 memorial. Turns out she had walking (dragging?) pneumonia. Not a big deal, but maybe there were some indicators leading up to the collapse. I guess when the only news that matters is attacks on Trump, why waste your time questioning Hillary’s problems; especially when it could lead to your termination.
I would be remiss to go any further without mentioning WikiLeaks. The world became familiar with WikiLeaks after PFC Chelsea (AKA Bradley) Manning released classified documents to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. What is WikiLeaks? A site with the intent to expose government secrets. Good or bad, I’ll let you decide, but now we have seen a barrage of emails taken from John Podesta, Hillary’s campaign chairman and the former Chief of Staff to Bill Clinton. I’m not even going to talk about what was in the emails yet, but rather their coverage or lack thereof. The spin on this from traditionally non-conservative news sources is twofold; first find everything that humanizes Hillary and bring it to the forefront, secondly discredit everything else as potentially tampered with or just ignore it outright. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want a foreign government interfering with our elections, but I also don’t want the news media to ignore news as well. In their defense, the Trump Access Hollywood scandal broke around the same time but ask yourself, which is really news; Trump being a pig or shady dealings throughout the Clinton Campaign? I’d at least say the latter deserves more than 67 seconds of airtime, wouldn’t you? So now let’s get to those devilish emails!
The leaked emails have brought to the forefront several pay-to-play schemes involving the State Department working with the Clinton Foundation and the FBI. While collusion between the Clinton Foundation and Hillary during her tenure as Secretary of State has been suspected by conservatives for a long time, the issue has not been pressed on her throughout her campaign. In fact, it was not until the third presidential debate in which the Clinton Foundation was brought up at all (thanks Chris Wallace). Sure, nothing has yet been completely proven, but as a voter I want to know about the even potentially shady deals of someone vying for the highest public office. One scandal now proven is Clinton campaign was allowed to edit articles for a Politico reporter; this after they attacked the New York Times into submission on an article they said was unfair. At this point I feel like I can just stop writing as every article written about Hillary ever should be held suspect, but I’m not finished yet. Let’s talk about the portrayal of Hillary in pop culture.
John Oliver (AKA funny Piers Morgan) has found the time to do a twenty minute segments on both Donald Trump and the third party candidates, but so far has done nothing about Hillary Clinton except to exonerate her of the numerous scandals surrounding her for the last two decades. Scandals including the Clinton Foundation and their suspected involvement with the State Department. I know what you’re saying, “Dylan, John Oliver is just a comedian, and it’s not his job to tell us the news.” You’re right, it’s definitely not. However, in today’s social media connected world, written articles aren’t as important as the catchy video, meme, or gif. Case in point, how many of you saw a meme claiming Ted Cruz said “there was no place for gays in his America”? This was entirely false but I know it came across my Facebook feed on numerous occasions.
Today the issue is too much information and the near impossibility of differentiating fact from fiction which is why now more than ever we need an unbiased media. I’m going to finish with a quick rundown of the difference in coverage between Hillary Clinton and Gary Johnson. Quick disclaimer, though I am a supporter of Gary Johnson I in no way fault the media’s coverage of his various snafus. The point is to illustrate the lack of coverage on Hillary’s mistakes.
Gary Johnson had his first national headline news with the infamous Aleppo flub. The media proceeded to attack him and his campaign, which they should do. The same however holds true for other candidates such as Hillary Clinton. In the final debate, Hillary claimed Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq and major stronghold of ISIS was on the Syrian border. Completely untrue as a simple look at a map will tell you. Why is there no concern the former Secretary of State who presided over a war there for three years, voted for it as a senator, and receives security briefings doesn’t know the location of such a key city?
After getting omitted from the first debate, Gary Johnson made a point he could act like an idiot in the debate and his poll numbers would go just because his name recognition would go up. This led to people claiming another gaffe. Goofy? Yes. Unpresidential? Far more embarrassing mistakes have made it to the oval office. Hillary is not without quirks either, have you seen how she reacts when talking about chai tea? I guess it’s only good to be goofy when you’re one of the least liked candidates in the history of the nation.
Gary Johnson missed the mark again when asked if he could name a foreign political leader he respected. The Libertarian nominee couldn’t remember the name of his favorite leader (former president of Mexico Vicente Fox) until his running mate Bill Weld helped him out. Well, here’s a name Hillary Clinton respects: Margaret Sanger. She claimed she admired Margaret Sanger the same way she does Thomas Jefferson; acknowledging his flaws (i.e. slavery) but respecting his works for the nation. This would be an adequate comparison if Thomas Jefferson’s work for the country included a plan to systematically eliminate anyone he saw as undesirable. I’m not trying to argue the merits of Planned Parenthood of which she is the founder, but simply point out while many conservatives are labelled racists for their small government policy stances, Hillary Clinton is unscathed in her open admiration of an admitted eugenicist.
If you have learned something in reading this, the media has failed. The Juanita Broaddrick scandal merits a pause. The attacks on the people questioning her health should make you leery. The State Department and Clinton Foundation scandals tied with the Wikileaks released emails should make you worried. All of this I hope encourages you to do your own research because a campaign slogan of “I’m Not Donald Trump” is very effective – after writing it I’m actually considering voting for her – there should be more you want to see out of your president.
In political times like these it is imperative we are told how much our decision making has sucked up until this point. Seriously guys, after seventeen people ran in the Republican primary we came up with Donald Trump. What the actual f*$%? I guess Republicans felt like winning was optional this year. Then the Democrats held a pseudo-primary intended to be Hillary’s tour of America. Well at least you can legitimately say Bernie got cheated, but the point is no one else even stood a chance in the first place. So as I’ve stated, we suck. But let me tell you why it’s not your fault.
Media bias is never acceptable no matter who or for what it’s against. This goes for both top candidates, but let’s start with Donald.
During the primary his campaign did not need to worry about raising money due to the free press he received which the New York times estimated in March to be around $2 billion. Not bad for a candidate who raised less money than all primary contenders who received more than one delegate with the exception of John Kasich. This is blamed highly on his erratic nature; the Huffington Post went as far as covering him in their entertainment section. Granted no one thought he would be successful, but when someone gets $2 billion in free air-time with people laughing at his antics rather than discussing his policy, they can get out of hand as we saw and now all have to live with.
But it didn’t just stop there. Rightwing media outlets such as Breitbart began to defend him unquestionably. This led to the exodus of many journalists including former editor-at-large Ben Shapiro following their support of the Trump campaign over their own reporter, Michelle Fields, who claimed to have been assaulted by then Trump campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski. As if Trump wasn’t cozy enough with Breitbart news as it was, he eventually added Stephen Bannon, the executive chairman of Breitbart News to his staff as a chief executive. This involvement in a campaign by a news network is what led the late Andrew Breitbart to form his news network as Ben Shapiro stated in an open letter following his resignation. Furthermore, Mr. Breitbart was opposed to Donald Trump for the same reasons the “Never-Trump” members get bashed for. Any Republican should expect support from a noted conservative news source such as Breitbart in the general election, but the extent of the involvement even during the primary really takes away all credibility.
But it doesn’t just stop there (have I said that before?). The largest conservative news outlet in the country was behind Trump from the start. Primetime legend Bill O’Reilly is notably friends with the real-estate mogul. Trump and Sean Hannity have a long-term friendship as Trump now famously called out in the first debate, “ask Sean Hannity!” in his denial of his initial pro-war stance in Iraq. Hannity has long maintained he is not a journalist so his support of Trump is not alarming per se. I don’t want to attack the journalistic integrity of O’Reilly as their friendship may not have led to any advantages in news coverage. However, with the goings-on between the Trump campaign and Breitbart, it is important to point out these conflicts of interest. Then, like with Breitbart, Trump took on the former CEO of Fox News, the embattled Roger Ailes as an advisor.
These are the kind of shady events Trump tries so hard to pin on the Clinton campaign. Conservatives will say who cares, with all the attacks by the drive-by/mainstream/leftwing media he needs all the support he can get. I have no problem telling them they’re wrong. Even if this only were to occur in the general election. As a voter I want to see the candidates torn to shreds. I want to know every dirty secret they have before I fill in the box next to who I think she be the leader of the free world. Instead, as liberal outlets laughed at the campaign and conservative outlets attacked them for it, no one asked Trump about his policies which include a new entitlement program, or cared to vet him thoroughly enough to uncover his “locker room” talk with Billy Bush.
Conservatives should feel cheated by the media as a whole for their lack of adequate coverage starting during the primary season. This is why Trump isn’t your fault. Hell, if I weren’t a natural-born cynic I may have fallen into that trap as well. But to all those who didn’t see this coming, I hope you learn to do your own research or next time you could see Charlie Sheen as your nominee. After all, he was all about “winning” before Trump even used the word.
